In honor of the new season of Game of Thrones premiering this weekend, we decided to channel our inner Wildlings, go “north of the wall,” and dive into the pitch black of the Ape Caves.
Down, down, down…
“This would probably be a bad time to ask if anyone has seen the movie ‘The Descent,'” someone asks as we descend into darkness.
I’m full of excitement and poorly timed horror film references. A few Lord of the Rings jokes leave my mouth and I am the only one to laugh. #nerdstatus
The Ape Caves are a 1.5 mile underground lava tube, formed by the ferocious Mt. St. Helens. Quite a precarious hike if, like us, you don’t bring strong enough flashlights/head lamps. I have a bit of a bruise on my head from a slight run in with a boulder.
The “hike” also involved scaling 8 foot walls, avoiding massive puddles, and hurdling baby crevasses. All in all, a gloriously creepy and difficult hike. We were pretty happy to see the light at the end of the tunnel 😉
Are you afraid of the dark?
